I'm about to purchase a JD 790, 4WD, mid-pto w/ belly mower and loader, for use on a 4 acre farm-to-be. My question is with the PTO; does live continuous mean that if the tractor is running, then the PTO is also always running? Is there a way to disengage the PTO to keep the belly mower from turning, while the tractor is running? Is this what the dual clutch is for? Also, can I hook up an appropriate post-hole digger to this tractor?I'd appreciate any prompt feedback. Thanks an have a good one!

The 790 is a good tractor for the price. There is three good ways of finding information on attachments. The first would be a purchasing guide from your dealer, or you could go to john deere.com whitch is there web site, but the one I use the most is www.jdlawns.com it is and excellent site that has all attachments except snow removing. The reason I chose this site is its the only one I've found that has prises listed. John Deere and Woods both make post hole diggers for your tractor, good luck. ....

Thanks Bob! I just got back from my local dealer, where I test drove and played in the dirt with the loader - very impressed with the tractor. They also explained PTO setup for me and it's just what I need. They proposed a unit with 4WD, Mid-PTO, Turf Tires and a 70 Loader for $14,100.

I was all set to sign the deal, but found out that the special John Deere program of zero % interest for 12 months expired on 2/25! Ouch! SO....? ....

I got my 790 in Oct. 99'. Love the machine, and sounds like you are getting a great deal. I paid 14,700 for 790 4wd mid/rear pto/70 loader/ ballast box/ turf tires.

The pto's have seperate levers and can be engaged one at time or both, as well as a 2-stage clutch, so yes to your question. But, I guess you know all this by now. Love the machine, and snow removal was a blast this winter.....
